More than a million soldiers were killed in the battles of the Somme the year before or injured. And now, protests well into the German Parliament, an ever greedier war economy in Germany, the revolution in Russia, mutinies in the French armed forces. The German parliament decides in July 1917 a peace resolution without consequences. A peace note of Pope in August met with rejection.
